Auld Lang Syne

Is my understanding of the famous poem/song as being a bit maudlin and introspective simply wrong?   Am I missing the point?

Towards the end of the Tattoo the entire crowd crossed arms and joined hands and sang it in a raucous joyful manner, shaking each others arms up and down with great enthusiasm (I had the good fortune of sitting next to a woman from England, her emotion was palpable). 

This morning on the telly we saw highlights of the closing ceremonies of the Commonwealth Games wherest they did the same thing.  Rock on!
